Update |
Eighteen actors were enrolled in three months (May-July 2004) intensive training and were also sensitized on the rights of women—girl child (gender) so to be well versed to face the communities. Prior to beginning the outreaches, they invited the Community Development Officer from the local government, councilors and other guests from sister organizations to witness the play “Fighting and Ending Domestic Violence against Women-girl child.” The government officers pledged their support, administratively and morally. The beginning outreaches were made to local communities in the Namatala slum and turnouts were very impressive. Problems encountered: the slum of Namatala is very large and seven languages are used, so to educate the community and to use seven different languages is a big challenge. Needed are more financial and manpower support before they can move to another slum. The majority of Namatala residents are semi-illiterate, so they can be educated on gender issues only through visual aids such as video and drama. It was reported that at the end of each play presentation, the drama team asks the communities questions as to what they have learned and the way forward in such circumstances. |
